Established in 1912, Shanghai Ocean University was on the bank of the Huangpu River, with an area of 700,000 square meters. The university is characterized by aquaculture, food science, fishery economics, fishery laws, and stresses the coordinated development of multiple disciplines and expertise in agriculture, science, engineering, economics, arts, and management. The university has good educational facilities, well-equipped laboratories, and special experimental equipment.
The history of SHOU can be traced back to Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School established in 1912. In 1904, Zhang Jian, a familiar industrialist, and educator proposed “fishery right is equal to sea right” to defend encroachment on fishery resources and safeguard the sea rights of China. He proposed to the Qing Government to settle a fishery school. Later on, with the assistance of Huang Yanpei and fund-raising efforts of Zhang Liu, the first president, the school was formally settled in 1912 as one of the earliest fishery schools in China. In 1927, the institution was renamed Fisheries School of College of Agriculture, National 4th Zhongshan University, and then resumed its former name, namely Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School.
In 1937, the school was demolished in the flames of war during Song Hu Anti-Japanese Battle on August 13, and move to Hechuan in Sichuan Province to continue fishery education. In 1938, the fisheries department was established in the National Second Middle School, and then National Sichuan Fisheries Technical School was entrenched in 1943. In 1947, the school was rebuild in Shanghai, named as Shanghai Municipal Wusong Fisheries Technical School, and then renamed Shanghai Fisheries Technical School in 1951. In 1952, the school was enhanced as Shanghai Fisheries Institute, becoming the first higher institute of fishery learning with undergraduate programs in China.
In 1972, under the influence of the Cultural Revolution, the institute was a move to Jimei, Xiamen, renamed as Xiamen Fisheries Institute. In 1979, it was move back to Shanghai and resumed its name, but Xiamen Fisheries Institute was kept as well. In 1985, it was renamed Shanghai Fisheries University. To provide the need of marine development of China, it was renamed as Shanghai Ocean University in 2008. In 2010, the Shanghai Municipal government and State Oceanic Administration registered an agreement to mutually construct Shanghai Ocean University. Then in 2011, the Shanghai government & the Ministry of Agriculture made the joint statement to build Shanghai Ocean University together. The motto of SHOU: Diligence, Sincerity, Dedication, and Practicality.
Shanghai Ocean University now has 1 national key discipline, 3 first-class Shanghai university disciplines (1 for A-Type, and 2 for B Type), 5 national characteristic specialties, 3 national superior courses, 20 Shanghai municipal superior courses, 12 key disciplines at provincial ministerial level, 2 Shanghai municipal superior courses for PE and health education, 8 demonstrative English courses of Shanghai Municipality, 1 teaching team at national level and 4 at municipal level, 2 experimental teaching demonstration center at national level. SHOU has now 12 colleges (departments). It has a complete education system, noticeable preponderant disciplines, and excellent research achievements.
SHOU has the postgraduate education, general undergraduate education, continuing education, and education of international students. The university has 2 centers for post-doctoral studies, 3 doctorate programs of first-level disciplines, 24 doctorate programs of second-level disciplines, 10 master programs of first-level disciplines, 55 master programs of second-level disciplines, and 3 programs for the professional postgraduate degree, covering 8 fields, 47 undergraduate majors, and 10 higher vocational specialties with about 12300 full-time students enrolled for bachelor and associate programs, and 3050 postgraduates.
Shanghai Ocean University consists of 3 campuses, namely the campus at Hucheng Ring Road in Pudong New Area, the campus at Jungong Road in Yangpu District and campus at Minxing Road in Yangpu District. According to the overall distribution planning of Shanghai universities, SHOU was relocated to Lingang New City, Shanghai in 2008. Situated in Hucheng Ring Road, the new campus occupies an area of around 1600 mu, and the planning construction area is 586,000 m2.
SHOU has good educational facilities, well-equipped laboratories, and special experimental equipment. Shanghai Ocean University has achieved 7 first prizes and 14-second prizes for teaching achievements in Shanghai Municipality. Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, the university has made a number of breakthroughs in research of the natural sciences and humanities, philosophy and social sciences, and made major contributions in aquaculture, marine fishery, aquatic product processing, food safety, low-temperature logistics of agricultural products, and fishing economics and management, and has achieved 2 awards for scientific and technological advancement at national level, 16-plus awards at provincial level, and six awards for policy-making consulting in Shanghai Municipality.
Shanghai Ocean University has built a close cooperation relationship with universities countries as U.S.A, Japan, Russia, Australia, Korea and areas as Taiwan and Hong Kong, as well as with various international organizations. It has signed cooperation agreements with 79 universities and research institutes in 23 countries. The university has exchanged overseas students with universities in various countries, and there are recently 126 international students studying at SHOU. The university has participated in Sino-US cooperative projects on marine living resources for a long period, and friendly cooperation with such international organizations as the FAO, Asian Fisheries Society, and Management Center of International Aquatic Living Resources.

Apply for a course in a Chinese University is very easy. Students just have to follow some steps to apply for their favorite course. In order to help students complete their online application, International students are recommended to follow the simple instructions.
Foreign applicants must provide the following documents to apply:
1. Application Form fills in Chinese or in English.
2. Passport & Passport Size Photo (Scan copy )
Dear student, the first thing you need to have a passport. This is more important documents because without a passport you can not go to study in your dream country. To have passport make you secure to live or study abroad. So if you don’t have it, we suggest you make your passport ready from the embassy office in your home country. Moreover if you have your passport already, then make sure your passport expiry date will not be expired. If it already be expired then you need to remake your passport.
The passport photo size (50mm x 40mm) in general. The photo should be clear and the background must be plain, white or off-white in color. The height of the head should be between 28mm – 33mm.The head width has to be between 21mm–24mm. Submit a color photo, taken in the last 6 months. Use a clear image of your face. Passport photo should not use filters on the face or take your photo from someone else or selfies. Take off your eyeglasses for your photo. Here is the sample of Passport Size Photo.
3. Transcripts & Certificates (Must be Notarized Copy )
Students for Bachelor Degree need to provide their school transcripts and certificates. For Master Degree Applicants have to bring their undergraduate transcripts and certificates. And Doctorate Degree studies must provide their both (undergraduate and graduate) transcripts and certificates.
Please take as a note that is, all the transcripts and certificates should be notarized.
Note : Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.
4. English Proficiency Certificate
In China, some universities does not asked IELTS but if you study in Chinese Taught for CSC scholarship, English Proficiency Certificate need to have ready. If you have IELTS already then you are lucky to study in China without delay.
5. CV/Resume
Applicants must have to prepare their CV if they want to study abroad in their desired country. The Resume or CV should include their academic qualifications with results, personal details (name, date of birth, marital status, national Id or school Id, physical address, contact no, nationality, language, etc), reference from your institution’s faculty (his/her name, address and designation), personal achievement, etc. To know how to make a standard CV please click here the sample of The Resume.
6. Study Plan or Research Proposal (Ms/PhD)
Applicants for graduate studies need a study plan or research proposal in Chinese or in English (no less than 800 words). This document is required only for Ms or PhD applicants.
7. Recommendation Letter (Ms/PhD)
Applicants for all graduate studies need two letters of recommendation from full professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English). Letters must be include professors’ phone number and email address. Here is the sample of Recommendation Letter.
8. Published Academic Papers or Other Academic Achievements (if applicable).
9. Foreign Physical Examination
Applicants are expected to keep the original copies filled in English. The medical examination must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Medical examination results will be valid for 6 months. All applicants are kindly requested to take this factor into consideration as they plan to take the medical examination. 10. Bank Statement
Bank statements must show to any foreign country for the purpose of a visitor or a business or an immigrants. For the study purpose in foreign countries also need to show bank statement. So dear applicants, you will need to have ready your all documents. Sponsorship can be your parents or anyone whom are your blood related.
11. Police Verification (No Criminal Record)
This is also need to have ready for the study purpose. It is important because foreign country does not allow criminal record. A Police Clearance Certificate is an official document approved by the police or government agencies in order to prove that the applicant has no criminal offense against him/her like arrest, conviction. Shanghai Ocean University, formerly known as Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries College, was established in 1912 and was upgraded to China’s first undergraduate institution of fisheries-Shanghai Fisheries College in 1952. Renamed “Shanghai Fisheries University” in 1985, it finally came to be known as Shanghai Ocean University in 2008.
